How do I leave a gift to my favorite non-profit?

It's easy. The most common way to establish a charitable gift is through a will or living trust. Whether you set aside a certain dollar amount or percentage of your assets, your will or trust makes sure that your estate benefits the organization of your choice.

Must I have a sizeable estate in order to leave a gift?

Everyone can leave a gift, no matter how big or small. Most people leave an estate when they die, even though they may not have a great deal of wealth.

How do I leave a gift to a specific organization?

A charitable bequest will not take effect unless you state your intention in your will or living trust. Without a will, you may lose control over your belongings after death. Your property and finances are settled according to state laws, whether or not they coincide with your wishes.

Do I tell the charity I've left a gift?

That is up to you. Charitable organizations often like to know in advance so that they can recognize your generosity and notify you of specific giving opportunities.

Who can help me to arrange for a gift?

You may talk to your professional advisor - such as your lawyer, financial planner, accountant or insurance agent - about establishing your gift. An advisor can inform you about the tax benefits of planned gifting. If you need a referral to a professional advisor, please call the Carroll County Community Foundation. at (765) 454-7298 for assistance.
