Carroll County Community Foundation Awards Grants

Nonprofit organizations awarded more than $23,300 in 2014

December 17, 2014 -- The Carroll County Community Foundation has awarded more than $23,300 in competitive grants to Carroll County nonprofit organizations in 2014. The grants are awarded in six areas of interest: arts and culture, human services, civic affairs, health, education and community beautification.

“These grants are made from our community grants/unrestricted funds,” said Dr. Greg Norman, chairman of the Carroll County Community Foundation Services Committee. “We are in a match period to build our endowment assets and increase our grantmaking capabilities.  For every $1 given to our community grants/unrestricted funds, Lilly Endowment will match with a $1. When the challenge is successfully met, $1 million ($500,000 from donors and $500,000 matched) will be put to work in our community. What a great opportunity to double your giving and support the services and programs that are so important to our community.”

The following agencies and programs were awarded grants:

$1,000 to Adams Mill will be used to print brochures, flyers and handouts to effectively market the property for historical and educational purposes. The marketing plan will continue to develop programming and events to attract visitors to the property and other venues in Carroll County.

$1,000 to Bauer Family Resources will provide funding support for a School Court Program in collaboration with Delphi middle and high schools. The program is based on the Teen Court model that is designed to reduce punitive sanctions for school misbehavior and increase classroom instructional time.

$3,000 to the Flora Community Club for Brady’s Hope provides funding support to schedule educational events to increase the community's awareness on the dangers of the misuse of prescription drugs. Grant money will be used to offset the costs of bringing the events to the community, including costs for speakers, supplies and marketing materials. The Brady's Hope program provides drug awareness education to students, staff, parents, and community members through venues such as school programs, sporting events, community programs and social media.

$291.28 to the Camden-Jackson Township Public Library will be used to purchase a bike rack that will allow for a more accessible library. Entrances will be cleared and patrons on bicycles will be sheltered from nearby traffic and have a secure place to place their bicycles while using the library.

$1,071 to the Carroll County Community Center will be used to purchase a commercial treadmill.

$1,000 to Carroll County Focus on the Future supports the 2015 Leadership Carroll County Class. Created in 2006, Focus on the Future created Leadership Carroll County to organize and run leadership training programs for people connected to Carroll County.

$3,500 to CDC Resources provides funding to support the start-up costs for the nursing service called Wellness Coordination. CDC will hire a registered nurse that will provide proactive management health services to people with intellectual and developmental disabilities to reduce emergency room visits, hospitalizations, the prevalence and incidence of obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes and educate family members about the benefits of healthful living.

$2,582.50 to the Delphi Preservation Society will provide support for the replacement of the Delphi Opera House air conditioning unit. Matching grant money will be used to replace the unit in the former sanctuary of the Delphi United Methodist Church now known as the community hall.  All events including weddings, plays and performances are open to the public and provide a venue for community events.

$2,500 to Delphi Public Library will be used to purchase an updated Early Literacy Station computer for the children's room at the main library. The computer offers more than 70 educational games to the youngest patrons of the library.

$5,800 to Flora Youth Baseball will help to cover the costs of purchasing two dugouts and four foul poles for the new baseball diamond that is being constructed in the Flora Town Park.

$1,600 to Heartland Heritage supports the Monument Park Project. Two sections of private land on either side of the abandoned rail bed have been donated for the creation of the park. Grant money will be used to help defray the costs of surveys, appraisals and closing costs.
